Holy Family
Antoni Gaudí began this utterly surreal temple in 1882, and it still hasn't been finished.
The Sagrada Familia, as it came to be known, was originally intended to be a modest church, but that idea went out the window and it has become the most famous building in Barcelona.
Gaudí broke away from the reigning neo-Gothic style of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and imbued every element of the Sagrada Familia with symbolic meaning.
Nature plays a key role: turtles, the Chinese symbol of order within chaos, form the bases of columns, and the capitals are palm trees.
The towers, which represent the apostles (these were originally meant to be twelve), crown the Nativity Façade.
Its three doors (Faith, Hope and Charity) correspond to Christian virtues.
The most outstanding features of the building as a whole are its generally Baroque style, the mixture of colours and the rich diversity of materials used (plaster, ceramic, mosaic, iron and many types of stone).
The construction is an on-going project, more than one century after its start, and sculptures by Josep Maria Subirachs and Etsuro Soto have been added recently.
