National Art Museum of Catalonia
Only in 1990 was the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) officially declared as a national museum; however, it houses the best collection of Romanesque mural paintings in the world, and it contains some real gems, such as the frescoes brought from the Pyrenean region: the most famous are those originally found in the churches of Santa Maria de Taüll, Sant Climent de Taüll and Pedret.
The museum's collection also includes other kinds of art, such as altarpieces, carvings, sculptures, gold and silver articles and glazed pieces.
The collection of Gothic paintings, with works by the most important painters within the Catalan School (14th and 15th centuries), is also worth mentioning, though there are valuable paintings from the rest of Spain and Europe as well.
The permanent exhibition is completed by the excellent Cambó Collection, which includes works by key Spanish artists such as Zurbarán, Goya and El Greco, among others.
Opening hours: tuesday to saturday, 10 am to 7 pm; sundays and public holidays, 10 am to 2.30 pm.
