Innere Stadt
The «inner city» is the first Viennese municipality district; it is the old town of Vienna, and, until the city boundaries were expanded in 1850, this was the city of Vienna.
Traditionally, the Innere Stadt was divided into four quarters, which were designated after important town gates: Stubenviertel (northeast), Kärntner Viertel (southeast), Widmerviertel (southwest) and Schottenviertel (northwest).
Nowadays, the Ringstraße circles the Innere Stadt along the route of the former city walls.
The main attractions include Albertina, the Burgtheater, Graben, the Hofburg, the Kapuzinergruft, the Kärntner Straße, the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the churches of Maria am Gestade, Peterskirche and Ruprechtskirche, Schottenstift, Stephansdom, the City Hall, the Pestsäule, the Virgilkapelle, the State Opera and the Stadtpark.
